World Day Against Trafficking in Persons
July 30, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Did you know human trafficking happens in Wisconsin?
July 30th is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Human trafficking is the use of violence, fraud or coercion to force someone to perform labor or commercial sex acts. Started by the United Nations, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons helps raise awareness about human trafficking around the world. But, did you know human trafficking is a major problem even here in Wisconsin?
Many are surprised to hear that human trafficking happens close to home. No Wisconsin community is immune to the presence of human trafficking.
There is a strong connection between domestic abuse and human trafficking. Because domestic abuse shelters are often the only crisis housing available for women in many Wisconsin communities, The Women’s Community’s programs regularly serve victims of trafficking.
The Women’s Community continues to advocate for changes in law and policy to better protect survivors and to better address human trafficking.
