Although the assailant had been found guilty at trial\, the Supreme Court argued that because jeans are difficult to remove\, the assailant couldn’t have done so without the victim’s help. Sounds outrageous\, yet all over the world\, women and men who are victims of sexual assault continue to be disbelieved and accused of causing the assault due to their behavior… or fashion sense. Everyone is invited to wear denim no matter where you are\, even working remotely from home! We encourage you to wear jeans on this day in support of survivors and bringing awareness to the issue. Post your photo to our social media pages on Facebook and Instagram! #denimday2022 \nThursday\, April 28th\, 2022 at 4:30pm\, A Message from Jessie Community Presentation:  Join us to hear a dynamic speaker with a powerful story.  Buck Blodgett has spoken to hundreds of audiences and we are thrilled to bring him to the community.  He shares the story of his daughter Jessie’s sexual assault and tragic death to inspire and motivate people to be resilient\, choose love\, and be a voice for change to end violence against women.  The event is free and located at NTC\, 1000 Campus Dr.\, Wausau\, WI\, Room E101/E102 or Virtual.  Light snacks provided. SUMMARY:We Step Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we are excited to announce an opportunity for our community to participate in an art exhibit to support survivors of sexual violence\, interpersonal violence\, or stalking.  We Step Into the Light is an art exhibit that seeks to inspire creativity that honors the healing process after an experience with sexual assault\, relationship or gender based violence\, or stalking.  The organizers of the exhibit are actively seeking volunteer artists and muses.  A Muse: anyone who has experienced sexual assault\, relationship or gender based violence\, or stalking. \nFor this event\, artists are paired with survivors who act as a muse for the art created; a piece that will celebrate the survivor. The piece should focus on the ambition\, goals\, and passions of the survivor rather than on their assault. Through a series of interactions\, the artist will be inspired by learning about the survivor and the piece will begin to take form. \nThe finished pieces are then gifted to the survivor as a forever reminder of their participation\, and more importantly\, the beautiful and meaningful life they lead. Through this project\, the hope is to offer a reminder of the strength\, beauty and power that we all possess\, even in the darkest of times.  The final art pieces will be on display on campus in April. More details to follow on the exhibit in the coming weeks. \nWe need artists and muses between now and March 31.  \nFor more information and to register\, visit https://westepintothelight.com/participate

SUMMARY:Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Clothesline Project: The Clothesline Project is a visual representation of Survivor experiences. Each shirt is made by a survivor of domestic/sexual violence or by someone who has had a loved one affected by violence.  The shirts are then hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the effects of violence in our community.  This year\, The Women’s Community Clothesline Project will be displayed at SafeFur Homes\, our Award Ceremony\, the Town Hall event\, and at various community locations throughout the month.  Watch our Facebook page for a virtual walkthrough of this moving display! \n  \nLight in the Window Social Media Campaign: The Light in the Window Campaign signifies community solidarity toward ending domestic violence in our community by organizing a display of purple lightbulbs in the windows and porches of residences\, businesses\, public buildings\, schools/universities\, hospitals\, churches\, etc. The campaign symbolizes communities’ concern in shedding light on the devastating effects of domestic violence and their unified commitment to make every home a safe home.  Join us in lighting up Marathon County!  To purchase your purple lightbulbs\, visit Ace Hardware in Weston or Charlie’s Hardware in Mosinee.  Throughout October\, tag @womenscommunity we’ll feature your posts on our Facebook\, Instagram\, and Twitter! \n  \nSaturday\, October 2\, 2021; SafeFUR Homes Dog Walk Festival & Fundraiser:  Family safety is important for everyone – including pets!  We are kicking off our 1st Annual SafeFUR Homes Dog Walk Festival & Fundraiser to raise awareness about the link between animal abuse and domestic abuse AND to raise funds to support the lifesaving services of The Women’s Community.  Join us for a fun and exciting day for the entire family\, especially the four-legged members!  This event will be held at Marathon Park\, 1201 Stewart Avenue\, Wausau\, from 11am-4pm.  For more information\, check out our Facebook event page! \n  \nThursday\, October 21\, 2021; Purple Thursday: This Purple Thursday\, make a fashion statement that really says something: wear something purple in honor of Survivors. Take a picture of yourself all dressed in blue and share it on your favorite social media platform using the #WearBlueDay2021. \n  \nWednesday\, April 7th\, 2021 Start by Believing Day: On this day we gather to end the silence and change the way we respond to sexual assault. We Start by Believing. Please join us on social media for information about how you can show support for survivors.  The next step is to speak out.  We invite you to sign a petition to support a victim centered response and show support for victims of sexual assault. To sign a national petition – https://www.startbybelieving.org/call-to-action/ \n \nWednesday\, April 14\, 2021 at 6:30pm Virtual Town Hall Meeting:  Sexual Violence on the Local Level: Meet members of the Marathon County Sexual Assault Response Team and learn about the roles of each team member\, what protocols are in place to respond to victims\, and what resources are available.   Team members include disciplines from law enforcement including the Victim Resource Unit\, Marathon County District Attorney’s Office\, and Marathon County Victim Witness\, forensic nursing\, the Department of Corrections and advocacy.  The Town Hall Meeting will be moderated by special guest Mayor Katie Rosenberg.  To receive the Zoom link please email Jessica@womenscommunity.org \n  \nTuesday\, April 20th\, 2021 at 6:30pm – Virtual Community Wide Book Reading: Join us in reading the New York Times bestseller\, ‘Not That Bad’:  Dispatches from Rape Culture by Roxane Gay. Copies are available at Janke Bookstore\, downtown Wausau. Join us for a live virtual discussion over Zoom.  To receive the Zoom Link\, please email Jessica@womenscommunity.org \n  \nWednesday\, April 28th\, 2021\, Denim Day: A symbolic gesture –Denim Day is an international protest responding to the Italian Supreme Court’s overruling of a rape conviction in 1999. #denimday2021 \nFor more information or how to make a donation to support survivors please visit our website at womenscommunity.org/ways-to-help/donate/
