SUMMARY:Ripple Effects: Community Impacts of Domestic Violence
DESCRIPTION:This free program is presented by Wausau Metro Strong in partnership with The Women’s Community\, the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce and Northcentral Technical College. \nThe harm of domestic violence ripples through the victim\, out to children\, families\, workplaces\, neighborhoods\, health care\, and other service providers. The effects of abuse also touch the lives of many people for months\, years\, and even generations to come. Join Wausau Metro Strong and the Marathon County Domestic Abuse Intervention Team as we explore the prevalence of domestic violence\, our community responses\, and available resources. \nRegistration is required. Register on the Wausau Chamber of Commerce website. \nAbout Wausau Metro Strong:  \nWausau Metro Strong (WMS) began as a grass roots group comprised of community leaders passionate about the mission to create a safe community for all. In the wake of the March 22\, 2017 deadly shooting where four people were killed by one man\, it left the area feeling vulnerable and unprepared for this type of attack. There was an overwhelming response to come together and do more. \nWith the support of the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin as fiscal agent for the committee and an Executive Team committed to creating positive change around the mission\, five pillars were established to help guide WMS’s strategy around community safety: Being Unified\, Being Prepared\, Being Supported\, Being Informed\, and Being Educated. \nSince WMS was established the group has spearheaded change in legislation resulting in more protection for Guardian ad Litems\, worked to update notification systems when there is a threat the community needs to be alerted to\, met with leaders in the Hmong community to better understand cultural differences and eliminate racial bias and began establishing tool kits for local businesses around safety. \nLunch:  \n\nAdmission includes lunch.\n\nTimeline: \n\n11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Registration\, Lunch\n11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. – Program\n1:00 p.m.- Event Concludes\n\nWausau Metro Strong fiscal agent:

He chooses to share his painful past to spread awareness\, educate and be an advocate for victims of sexual abuse. Join us to hear a dynamic speaker with a powerful story.  The event is free and located at NTC\, 1000 Campus Dr.\, Wausau\, WI\, Room E101/E102. In the midst of the national reckoning around sexual assault brought on by the #MeToo movement\, she is re-evaluating a relationship she had when she was 15 with her 42-year-old English teacher Jacob Strane. In 2017\, Strane is accused of sexual abuse by another former student\, who reaches out to Vanessa. Vanessa suddenly finds herself facing an impossible choice: remain silent\, firm in the belief that her teenage self willingly engaged in this relationship\, or redefine herself and the events of her past. Content Warning: Graphic sexual violence content.  Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83018797677?pwd=Rk4rN1pnYWFoYmlGdjR4dXpsdzc2UT09 \nWednesday\, April 26\, 2023\, Denim Day: A symbolic gesture –Denim Day is an international protest responding to the Italian Supreme Court’s overruling of a rape conviction in 1999. Although the assailant had been found guilty at trial\, the Supreme Court argued that because jeans are difficult to remove\, the assailant couldn’t have done so without the victim’s help. Sounds outrageous\, yet all over the world\, women and men who are victims of sexual assault continue to be disbelieved and accused of causing the assault due to their behavior… or fashion sense. Everyone is invited to wear denim. We encourage you to wear jeans on this day in support of survivors and bringing awareness to the issue. Post your photo to social media pages on Facebook and Instagram and tag The Women’s Community\, #denimday2023. \nThursday\, April 27\, 2023\, 5:00pm-7:00pm\, We Step Into the Light Art Exhibit Open House:  Enjoy art work created by volunteer survivors who collaborated together through We Step Into the Light\, a project raising awareness about sexual assault\, relationship and gender based violence\, and stalking.  Artists are paired with survivors who act as a muse for the art created.  All artwork focuses on celebrating survivors and their ambition\, goals\, and passions of the survivor.  Food and refreshments will be provided.  Mingle while enjoying art\, music and food. A formal presentation on the project and artwork will take place at 5:45pm. The event will be held at UWSP at Wausau\, 625 Stewart Ave\, Wausau\, WI  54401 in the UW Center for Civic Engagement. \nFor more information or how to make a donation to support survivors please visit our website at http://womenscommunity.org/ways-to-help/donate/

SUMMARY:We Step Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce an opportunity for our community to participate in an art exhibit to support survivors of sexual violence\, interpersonal violence\, or stalking.  We Step Into the Light is an art exhibit that seeks to inspire creativity that honors the healing process after an experience with sexual assault\, relationship or gender based violence\, or stalking.  The organizers of the exhibit are actively seeking volunteer artists and muses.  A Muse: anyone who has experienced sexual assault\, relationship or gender based violence\, or stalking. \nFor this event\, artists are paired with survivors who act as a muse for the art created; a piece that will celebrate the survivor. The piece should focus on the ambition\, goals\, and passions of the survivor rather than on their assault. Through a series of interactions\, the artist will be inspired by learning about the survivor and the piece will begin to take form. \nThe finished pieces are then gifted to the survivor as a forever reminder of their participation\, and more importantly\, the beautiful and meaningful life they lead. Through this project\, the hope is to offer a reminder of the strength\, beauty and power that we all possess\, even in the darkest of times.  The final art pieces will be on display on campus in April. More details to follow on the exhibit in the coming weeks. \nWe need artists and muses between now and February 10.  \nhttps://westepintothelight.com/participate

Everyone is invited to wear denim no matter where you are\, even working remotely from home! We encourage you to wear jeans on this day in support of survivors and bringing awareness to the issue. Post your photo to our social media pages on Facebook and Instagram! #denimday2022 \nThursday\, April 28th\, 2022 at 4:30pm\, A Message from Jessie Community Presentation:  Join us to hear a dynamic speaker with a powerful story.  Buck Blodgett has spoken to hundreds of audiences and we are thrilled to bring him to the community.  He shares the story of his daughter Jessie’s sexual assault and tragic death to inspire and motivate people to be resilient\, choose love\, and be a voice for change to end violence against women.  The event is free and located at NTC\, 1000 Campus Dr.\, Wausau\, WI\, Room E101/E102 or Virtual.  Light snacks provided. SUMMARY:We Step Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we are excited to announce an opportunity for our community to participate in an art exhibit to support survivors of sexual violence\, interpersonal violence\, or stalking. \nWe need artists and muses between now and March 31.  \nFor more information and to register\, visit https://westepintothelight.com/participate
